Team supports Chernobyl’s Children visit

The Woking branch of the charity ‘Friends of Chernobyl’s Children’ aims to relieve the suffering of the children of Belarus who are still affected by the fallout from the radiation following the nuclear explosion at Chernobyl in 1986. These children are now second generation but are still affected – with many living impoverished lives.FOCC Photo A

The charity brings groups of children over to the UK for one month every year where they are hosted by local Woking families who provide them with board and lodging as well as general love and care. They have access to doctors and dentists, attend local schools and participate in fun days out and activities.

On the 14th October the children visited members of the team at the MacDonald Stewart Canadian Pavilion in Bisley where they enjoyed a visit from a Fire Engine.FOCC Photo B

The Woking CFR team also provided funding for a year’s supply of multivitamins for all the children, many of whom suffer with vitamin deficiencies.

Sue McKeown from Friends of Chernobyl’s Children said:

“The children arrived looking grey and generally very run down (faces, hair, nails and personalities).   Over the course of the month they were here all of us noticed a huge change in both physical as well as mental aspects of every child.  They became more energetic, they turned a normal colour, they smiled, they became normal 8 year old kids.  Obviously a number of factors lead to this dramatic change but I am confident that the vitamins you provided played a vital role in what we all observed.

What is so nice about your donation is that it will continue to work for the whole of the time they are back home too, as each child was duly packed off home with a year’s supply.  I wanted to thank you from all of us for your wonderful support, both in providing the vitamins and the medical bag for the trips out, as well as for making other connections to give the children such a special day to remember with the fire engine experience”

The Woking CFR team would like to thank everyone at the MacDonald Stewart Canadian Pavilion for hosting the event (and for making lovely cakes!), Southern Fire & Rescue and Kerry J photography for capturing the children’s smiles on film
